Art Activities at Coos County Nursing Home

Workshop and exhibit with the residents of the Coos County Nursing Home

Project Description:

Judi Calhoun, a member of CRAG, will present nine acrylic painting classes at the nursing home from

September 8, 2008 to September 26, 2008. During the class, each resident will create

a painting relating to their favorite thing about the North Country.

The one and a half hour classes, which will be presented three times a week, will cover

the basics of painting with acrylics. The residents will be divided into two groups of five,

and will "learn by doing" as they work on their individual paintings during the class.

When the classes are finished, an art exhibit will be held on September 27, 2008 in the

new recreation room at the nursing home. After the exhibit, the residents, with guidance

and assistance from the class leader, will hang their paintings in a hallway that is a high

traffic area on the second floor. The classes and exhibit provide an opportunity for

community building; staff and residents get to socialize and new friendships can blossom

among residents.

People from Northern New Hampshire and Vermont, area politicians and the press will

be invited to view the paintings created by the residents during the reception at the opening

of the exhibit. This will provide an opportunity for nursing home administrators to acknowledge

the artists, the instructor, the Connecticut River Artist Group, and emphasize the value of the

program.
